By actually achieving your goals though, you'll increase your confidence in a step-by-step fashion. Your subconscious starts recording all of these activities and thus, gradually, you start believing that you too can do whatever you'd like to do. Success breeds success, or so they say.

As the Sanskrit saying goes, "You are an average of your five friends".
