According to the White House's Office of national Drug Control Policy strategy update released in February, parents are the most important role models in children's lives. When a family has strong convictions against the use of these substances based on "family" values "What will my parents think?" is generally the first thought process when a child is making crucial decisions on whether or not to use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
One such growing problem that the police departments are seeing with teens happens to a simple household item- cough syrup. 10 percent of teens report having used cough medicine to get high and 50 percent of those teens strongly disagree that using cough medicine to get high is risky.
A great way to start opening an avenue for discussion could be over dinner, games, while driving, and or when you see a group of people such as teenagers drinking and hanging out. When you ask how your child's day was look them in the eye and really listen. Knowing who your child's friends are and inviting them over will also help you to know what your kids might be involved in.
In recent years there has also been an increase of prescription drugs being abused. Prescription drugs , can be quite powerful that is why they require a person to consult with a doctor on what medication they need, how it should be taken and whether there is potential for interactions with other medicines the person may be taking. Prescription medicines are made to be safe when following a doctor's advice and the directions are followed.
Abuse of prescription drugs come into play in many ways. Others take or share relatives' prescription medications without knowing what effects they might have on the body. Some people who have one prescription may go to several different doctors for prescriptions, not telling any one doctor about their other medications. Another easy way a person might start with abusing their medication would be to simply take more than the doctor prescribed.
Using medications in any way other than prescribed is extremely dangerous. Prolonged use of many prescription medicines can lead to addiction, and when medicines dosage is changed to achieve a high, or they are combined with alcohol or other drugs it can become not only addictive but extremely dangerous.
Give your children the facts- if they use drugs they will not get a drivers license, they will not be playing sports, running on the beach, dating, or going to college. Drugs are illegal, you could see jail time, fines, and by using a drug even just one time can make you do something that you will regret for a lifetime. Let your children know they DO HAVE A CHOICE choose freedom, not drugs!
